REVIEW

All I can say after reading the latest (7th) Puffin Island novel Secrets at Teacup Cottage by Christie Barlow is WOW! What a great premise and hook you won’t ever expect or forget. I have loved this series immensely but this last book notched up to another whole level. It is filled with complex characters, mind-altering mysteries, jarring twists and turns, numerous levels and layers in the plotline, that left me dizzy with curiosity. I was so eager to keep reading once I started that I stayed up half the night caught between the pages of this wonderfully captivating story. Recently, I was on a mystery thriller binge that topped up my interest in that genre and this novel kept that racing pace happening. It held me just as steadfast with its secrets, clues and unexpected pathways to the truth. And there were so many delightful and devastating surprises. Such a heart wrenching, rich and imaginative family story that kept me captive to the very end. It is flawlessly told in two timelines that beautifully merge together towards a magnificent and heart-stopping finale. This was such a clever and seamless execution.

The story is focused on Mabel Grey and her daughter Nora. They live on Puffin Island and have a pottery and tea business. Mabel Grey becomes known as the keeper of secrets. Her Teacup Cottage shelves are filled with decorative hand painted teacups she made herself. I was fascinated by the colours and designs and what the original set of eight represented. Depending on which one you chose, it said a lot about you. Hopeful pink, enduring blue, chatter’s floral, controlled green, decisive gold-flecked cream, plain white pretender, quietly brave yellow and lastly and most importantly to the plot is the blue and white striped one that represented trouble. We know the latter is going to usher in some traumatic events. And true to form, it happens in the first chapter when Mabel’s younger sister walks through her door and chooses the blue and white striped one. Trouble is on its way…

Even though you could get a cup of tea at Mabel’s cottage, it was the second cup that set off an intriguing pattern that became a custom. ‘First cup is tea. Second cup is truth.’ When tourists (or family) wandered into her shop, had their first cuppa and then moved on to their second, they began to confess their long held secrets. Mabel was a good listener and it may be what inspired others to start spilling their deepest innermost thoughts and fears. But she was also a good steward of those confessions, she kept every one confidential, never disclosing what was shared with her. It was a heavy burden to bear though and it took its toll sometimes on her health, and particularly when her sister Winnie shares her deepest secret on her second cup: a truth that will one day shatter many lives. But we don’t get to learn what that is for a long time! Sadly, though, when Winnie decides to go for a walk and swim, the worst thing imaginable happens. Plus the trouble blue and white striped teacup goes missing. What an amazing Prologue! If that does not perk up your curiosity radar, I don’t know what will!

And the novel flows like a dream back and forth between the two timelines and three perspectives (Nora, Mabel and Harriet). So how effectively written is this book? It is top notch in every way. The high stakes tension of solving a secret or crime is at the forefront but there is also a tug on the heartstrings with a developing romance in the background between a young couple in the present but also there are ones in the past. Julian and Harriet’s story is an intriguing one and his best friend drops clues that will keep you guessing. Most of these characters are holding on to major secrets and when these are revealed, everything cracks open with such force it will knock you off balance.

Beware, there are some deep and fascinating characters who are not always as they seem. Then there are the innocent ones like the handsome fisherman Leo who adds wonderful support and kindness to Nora’s troubled life—the girl who thinks everyone of personal importance will leave her as that has been her experience. This feeling may stem from the fact she does not know who her father is and why he has not been in her life. (Her mother does not share this truth with her, until forced to, towards the end.) What is his story? Nora is curious and takes matters into her own hands. As she attempts to solve a mystery, it ends up being bigger than anything she could have ever dreamed up!

Need I say more, no. Read this amazing family drama that will grab on to your heart and not let go. The majority of the story is set on Puffin Island. A community with heart, love and concern at its core. A setting that is very beautiful, peaceful and welcoming. A place for new beginnings or much needed fresh starts. But also an island home that harbours many secrets. Or at least in the hearts of some of the residents. All I can say is— get on board and read this stunning novel and all the earlier ones in the series. You won’t be sorry. 5 Stars all the way! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
