REVIEW

This is a heart-warming and uplifting story of friendship, finding your purpose, second chances, family and love. It is full of charm, mystery and legend. Friendship looms strong and a sisterhood shines through the five hagstones (which becomes their secret weapon!) and what they mean to these women who have been through some rough times such as loss and abuse. Dreams and confidences have been shattered but fresh beginnings bring new aspirations that bind these determined women together in a band of hope, light and concern for their community. It is their mission to help others in need. To spread joy, see good things happen and to be an encouragement where they can. And in the midst of the magic of the stones, good things begin to happen to these ladies in this circle, too. Past mistakes are rectified, reunions occur and hearts are mended. New partnerships are formed and the joy of cooking is reinstated for two of the ladies.

It was uplifting to read about the women who try to move beyond their struggles by helping others. I also enjoyed the information shared by the characters about the stone circles in a variety of locations and their purpose and meaning. Having seen a few of these in Ireland, I am always fascinated by the folklore that surrounds them. Eve’s description of their longevity is so true: ‘Ancient, strong and still standing after going on for four thousand years and more…all different, all beautiful…part of ancient community worship…” The signs and symbols are as extensive as their variations. In some ways, these ladies try to resurrect the ‘old ways, the simple beliefs, the community ties’ in their attempts to utilise and commune with these stones. For we see how they turn to them for guidance and receive answers. Intriguing and mystical but belief is a strong motivator as it assists in navigating the challenges that come their way. Which only proves to deepen their belief in what these stone can do for them—such as fostering courage and self-esteem.

Eve is sad after the loss of her beloved bakery that she spent thirty years building up. This change leads her to a cosy cottage by the sea where she withdraws to be alone. But her neighbour Ruth, who has had her own share of heartaches and regrets, breezes into Eve’s life with warmth, wisdom and delicious food! And this new friendship turns Eve’s life around and she begins to find worthwhile purpose.

We get a good picture of each of the women of this friendship circle as the story moves along at a steady pace. The layers of their lives unfold purposefully and with sincere emotion. As the positives take shape when truths come to the surface, the beauty of restoration in hearts begin. Some believe due to the magic of the stones.

The Friendship Circle by Amanda James is an intriguing and hopeful story that shines with warmth, friendship and forgiveness. The main five of Eve, Ruth, Tee, Donna and Jess are solid characters that give this novel breath. For their voices and beliefs resound with a unified message that it is important to hold on to your dreams as it is possible to start again—even after the worst of times. 4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
